A tunnel-aged, heavily peated cask finished in PX sherry quarter casks caps off the 10th anniversary

The TOKYO Whisky Library team, whose walls are lined with more than 1,300 whisky bottles, selected a single cask (Cask #3547) from Nagahama Distillery's aged stock to mark this milestone 10th year.
The heavily peated spirit, distilled in March 2020, was filled into a bourbon quarter cask and matured at the "NAGAHAMA Aging Cellar," a former road tunnel no longer in use. It was then given a luxurious secondary maturation in a Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry quarter cask before being bottled in June 2026. The result is a special single cask whisky limited to just 194 bottles, aged 6 years at cask strength (53.8% ABV).
As with the previous release, the label features an ukiyo-e print from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" series. Fitting the smoky flavor of the heavily peated whisky, it depicts "Moon Through Smoke," showing a standard-bearer of Edo's Ichi-gumi fire brigade standing before roaring flames, with a hazy full moon glowing faintly through the smoke behind.

Tasting Notes
Color
A deep, beautiful ruby mahogany.
Aroma
An elegant, smoky character like quietly rising white smoke takes the lead, with the fruitiness of fully ripe red berries and dark cherries from the sherry cask emerging behind it in graceful layers.
Taste
Extremely rich on the palate, with concentrated fruit flavors spreading pleasantly. A deep richness reminiscent of worn leather and bitter chocolate. The powerful, smoky accent of heavy peat dominates throughout, delivering a heaviness and depth beyond its years and an overwhelming sense of substance.
(TOKYO Whisky Library Manager Kazumasa Okada)
Like unwrapping a cherry candy while wrapped in campfire smoke.
On the palate, the texture is smoother than expected, offering fresh reddish berry fruit that is quickly swept away by a blast of smoke. Amid the shift from billowing white smoke to notes of soot and charcoal, the flavor feels like a search for the lost red fruit. The PX quarter cask avoids cloying sweetness, offering clarity, with restrained tannins lending a gentle depth. With just a touch of water, the fruit reappears quickly, but by then it has transformed into a smoother sweetness reminiscent of confiture or syrup.
About Nagahama Distillery

Nagahama Distillery began operations in 2016 within the Nagahama Roman Beer facility, making it one of Japan's smallest craft distilleries. Nurtured by Lake Biwa, Mount Ibuki, and the rich natural surroundings of Nagahama City in Shiga Prefecture, its small alembic-style pot stills and extremely narrow lyne arms produce a signature rich, deep spirit every day, and it continues to earn high praise at whisky competitions in Japan and abroad.
