Zen Kashoin in Kyoto's Muromachi Rolls Out Summer Cold Sweets, Led by a New Aloe and Kotoka Strawberry Iced Dessert

Zen Kashoin, the Kyoto-based confectionery house, is rolling out a selection of cool, summery sweets and frozen desserts for the season. The items are served at its 然花抄院 京都室町本店 (Zen Kashoin Kyoto Muromachi Main Store) and at its 茶庭 然花抄院 counter inside ShinQs by TOKYU DEPARTMENT STORE in Shibuya Hikarie.

Leading the lineup is a new iced dessert built on a syrup made with "Kotoka" (古都華), a Nara-grown strawberry known for its rich aroma and deep sweetness, layered with the juicy texture of aloe for a clean, refreshing flavor.

About Zen Kashoin

Zen Kashoin Kyoto Muromachi Main Store

Zen Kashoin Kyoto Muromachi Main Store opened in August 2009 on Kyoto's Muromachi-dori, on a corner lined with long-established kimono fabric merchants. The shop's name carries a wish to welcome guests with a heart full of flowers and to let them enjoy the true taste of its confections.

Rare in Kyoto for its wide frontage, this machiya townhouse is a renovation built on the Edo-period foundations of a structure originally erected in Genroku 13 (1700). Passing through the noren curtain, you step into a doma (earthen-floored) entryway. Freshly made sweets, prepared in an adjoining workshop, line a spacious setting where touches of the past — a kamado hearth and stone paving — still remain. In the tea salon, fragrant with the aroma of tea, guests can relax while gazing out at the inner courtyard garden.

The shop offers menus to be enjoyed with all five senses, alongside the changing scenery of each season. The adjoining Gallery SUGATA hosts special and permanent exhibitions by artists suited to the space.
