Hakone Tozan Railway Marks Type 100 Retirement with Natural Cooler Tour and Model Train Collection

The Type 100 rail cars (Moha 1 and Moha 2), operated by Odakyu Hakone Co., Ltd. and a symbol of the Hakone Tozan Railway's mountain line since it first opened, will end operation in January 2028. Cherished by generations of passengers, the cars have carried more than 100 years of history and travelers' memories.

To thank customers for their years of patronage, a series of commemorative initiatives is being rolled out through the end of operation. For the third installment, a special tour lets riders experience the charm of the Type 100 cars, among the oldest active retro rail cars in Japan: the "Natural Cooler Experience Train." The chartered tour runs aboard Type 100 cars that have no air conditioning, with windows opened wide so guests can enjoy Hakone's cool mountain breeze at a relaxed pace.

Alongside the tour, a complete-retirement commemorative model train collection, "Memories of the Type 100," will also be released, modeling 10 rail cars not previously produced in past Tetsudo Collection or N-gauge lineups. Together, the tour and the collection let fans enjoy the Type 100's history through both experience and record.

Special Chartered Tour "Natural Cooler Experience Train" and Photo Session

One of the few rail cars in Japan without air conditioning, the Type 100 lets riders feel Hakone's refreshing breeze through large windows that open wide. The tour provides a relaxed reserved seat for one person per window, so guests can take in the mountain scenery to themselves while experiencing the steep grades and switchbacks unique to a mountain railway, aboard a specially chartered train.

Release of the Complete Retirement Commemorative Model Train Collection "Memories of the Type 100"

Following last year's release of the Moha 1 and Moha 2 in a special package marking the announcement of the Type 100's full retirement, a new Tetsudo Collection (produced by Tomytec Co., Ltd.) featuring Type 100 rail cars will go on sale. The precision miniature models capture the Type 100 cars that have lived on in the memories of passengers who rode them across the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras.
