A Local's Guide to Hidden Gems Near Asakusa - Discover Yanaka Ginza!

Hello! This is Chida from the Holiday Travel editorial team! ✨

Today, as someone who lives in Asakusa, I'd like to share a special spot that's perfect for a side trip during your Asakusa sightseeing!

When it comes to easily accessible tourist spots from Asakusa, places like Oshiage, Kuramae, and Ueno are quite popular. But actually, Yanaka Ginza shopping street is also highly recommended!

Easy Access from Asakusa!

You can take a direct bus from a bus stop near Senso-ji Temple to Nippori Station. From there, it's about a 10-minute walk to Yanaka Ginza shopping street! If you use the train, it takes about 20-30 minutes from Asakusa via Ueno to Nippori with just one transfer, making it very convenient.

A Shopping Street with Old Downtown Atmosphere

Yanaka Ginza shopping street is a wonderful place where the atmosphere of the Showa-era downtown Tokyo is still preserved. Individual shops are packed tightly along this short 170-meter street.

You'll find fried foods (menchi-katsu and croquettes), freshly baked bread, prepared dishes, standing bars, and cute general stores lined up, making it fun to stroll around while enjoying street food.

Around the shopping street, there are also stylish cafes renovated from old Japanese houses and galleries scattered throughout. I recommend finding your favorite spots while exploring!

Lately, I see quite a lot of international tourists here. It seems to be gaining popularity as a place to enjoy the atmosphere of Japan's "local downtown."

Best to Visit During Daytime

One thing to note: most shops close at night, so I recommend visiting during the daytime. It's perfect to do your Asakusa sightseeing in the morning and head to Yanaka Ginza in the early afternoon!

If you have time, definitely check out the sunset view from Yuyake Dandan, the stone steps on the Nippori Station side. It's absolutely beautiful.

Explore Yanesen and Ueno Area Together

I also recommend combining Yanaka Ginza with the entire Yanesen area and Ueno. There are plenty of spots to enjoy for half a day to a full day, including Nezu Shrine, Asakura Museum of Sculpture, and Ueno Park.
