At Shangri-La Tokyo (Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; General Manager: Matthias Sutter), the Lounge & Bar "The Lobby Lounge" will serve a "Halloween Afternoon Tea" from September 16 (Wednesday) and an "Autumn Afternoon Tea" from November 1 (Sunday). Both menus make generous use of seasonal ingredients that represent autumn, including chestnut, pumpkin, apple, and Pacific saury, offering sweets and savories built around the rich flavors of the harvest season.
Halloween Nebuta Lantern Display
For this year's Halloween Afternoon Tea, The Lobby Lounge will be decorated for the first time with ten charming and fantastical Halloween-themed nebuta lanterns created by nebuta artist Asako Kitamura, known for the Christmas nebuta that has become a winter tradition at Shangri-La Tokyo. Motifs symbolizing Halloween — including jack-o'-lanterns, candles, ghosts, owls, bats, and skeletons — are rendered as delicate nebuta pieces, creating a playful atmosphere and adding extra impact to the autumn-only afternoon tea. To let guests admire the illuminated, fantastical expressions of the lanterns, a special evening High Tea will also be offered during the period.
Sweets
The chef's top recommendation is the Mont Blanc, a classic representing the flavors of autumn: a chestnut-studded financier layered with meringue and chantilly cream, finished with a fragrant Mont Blanc cream. The Apple Babka braids a Danish dough kneaded with raspberry almond cream and bakes it before pairing it with red apple confiture and a light whipped cream, delivering the rich flavor of apple in an autumn-appropriate piece — decorated with red spider-web-motif chocolate for Halloween and dusted with raspberry powder for Autumn. The Cassis Chocolate Donut takes its motif from Frankenstein's monster for a playful touch, balancing rich chocolate depth with the refreshing tartness of cassis for a light finish. For Halloween, the Purple Sweet Potato and Chai Latte Pudding layers a spiced chai latte pudding with cacao crumble and milk-chocolate-coated rice puffs for textural contrast, topped with a rich purple sweet potato cream, caramelized walnuts, and a ghost-shaped chocolate; the Autumn version, the Silk Sweet Potato and Chai Latte Pudding, pairs an elegantly sweet silk sweet potato cream with sweet potato chips for a deeper sense of the season. The Pumpkin Mousse layers a pumpkin brownie, caramel sauce, and matcha joconde inside a smooth pumpkin mousse set over a chocolate sponge, finished with a bat-shaped cookie for the Halloween Afternoon Tea and candied pumpkin for the Autumn Afternoon Tea.
Savories
The savory lineup also brings out the flavors of autumn. The afternoon tea opens with an autumn-limited Mushroom Potage, made with fragrant mushrooms for a warming, deeply flavorful cup. The Lobster Flan and Snow Crab with Trout Caviar balances the rich umami of lobster with the delicate sweetness of snow crab for a layered dish. The Pork Rillette and Pumpkin Loaf Sandwich wraps pork rillette — rich in flavor with a tender texture — in a gently sweet pumpkin bread, accented by the refreshing acidity of pickles. The Pacific Saury Roll Sushi with Cucumber and Colorful Sesame is a Japanese-style roll featuring saury, a representative autumn ingredient, rolled with pickled cucumber and coated in colorful sesame seeds for a dish that balances the umami of saury with the crisp freshness of cucumber. The Autumn Vegetable Quiche with Chestnut Purée brings together the deep flavor of seasonal autumn vegetables with the subtle sweetness of a smooth chestnut purée, evoking the arrival of the season.
Scones
Three scone varieties are offered: Classic, an apple-shaped Apple scone made with rooibos-tea-infused dough, and a German Potato scone combining mashed potato with crispy bacon. Condiments include clotted cream and cinnamon curd, along with a choice of one jam or honey from four options: strawberry, blueberry, yuzu marmalade, or Japanese honeybee honey.
Pass-Around
The free-refill "Pass Around" service features the Chocolate Caramel Cookie Choux, generously filled with rich chocolate cream and caramel sauce.
In a tranquil space set apart from the bustle of the city center, October brings the Halloween Afternoon Tea alongside the fantastical Halloween nebuta lanterns, while November brings the Autumn Afternoon Tea, showcasing the flavors of the harvest season. Guests can spend an afternoon steeped in the rich tastes of autumn while sensing the changing of the seasons.
About Nebuta Artist Asako Kitamura
Asako Kitamura is the first female nebuta artist in the history of the craft. She trained under her father, Takashi Kitamura, the sixth-generation Nebuta Meijin (master nebuta artist) and a leading figure in the field with numerous accomplishments. In 2007, moved by her father's large-scale nebuta "Saint Shotoku Taishi" (winner of the Nebuta Grand Prize), she decided to become a nebuta artist. She made her debut in 2012 at the request of the Aomori Citizens' Nebuta Executive Committee, and her debut work, "The Battle of Takuroku," drew attention after winning the Excellent Production Award.
Her awards include the Best Production Award (three times), the Excellent Production Award (six times), and the Mutsu Culture Award. In recent years, she has also been energetically creating sculptural works using nebuta techniques, promoting the appeal of nebuta both in Japan and abroad. At last year's Osaka Expo, she exhibited a large-scale nebuta as well as a medium-sized nebuta made using upcycled washi paper.
