On March 1, 2026, Shibuya Center-Gai played host to a one-day kimono runway as part of SCG DAYs 2026 (SCRAMBLE GATE: SHIBUYA CENTER-GAI), a large-scale event aimed at spotlighting local culture and fostering community pride. Shibuya Tsumugi, a shop focused on vintage and original kimonos, took part with a kimono fashion show that brought a "tradition × trend" concept to the open streets.
The event was organized by the Shibuya Center-Gai Regional Collaboration Event Executive Committee — made up of the Shibuya Center Shopping Street Promotion Association and Udagawacho Neighborhood Association — with backing from Shibuya Ward, the Shibuya Ward Tourism Association, and the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry Shibuya Branch. It featured traditional performing arts from across Japan, a store rally, a lottery, and a local goods fair.
The Fashion Show
Using the open street space of Shibuya Center-Gai as a runway, Shibuya Tsumugi showcased kimono styles that bridge tradition and contemporary life. The models were Shibuya Tsumugi staff and others involved in the shibuyabai project — team members who work daily on the streets of Shibuya and wore kimonos coordinated to suit the neighborhood's distinctive atmosphere.

Passersby stopped to watch, pulling out phones to capture the show — turning the street itself into a lively showcase for modern kimono culture.
Background
Shibuya Tsumugi has positioned kimonos as an accessible cultural experience meant to be enjoyed in everyday life, not just on special occasions. With the resurgence of inbound tourism in recent years, visitor demand has shifted toward "experiential" travel — engaging with local culture directly rather than simply sightseeing. Kimonos have become a particularly popular way for travelers of all backgrounds to connect with Japanese culture by wearing it.
The shop also focuses on repurposing and reintroducing vintage kimonos, seeking to combine cultural preservation with sustainable consumption through reuse. Adapting tradition for modern lifestyles — and passing it on to the next generation — is a central theme.
Participating in SCG DAYs 2026, an event where traditional performing arts take center stage on the streets of Shibuya Center-Gai, offered Shibuya Tsumugi a way to reach a broad audience and present kimonos as an entry point into experiential culture. The show was also intended to serve as a gateway for deepening interest in local and Japanese culture more broadly.
