Starting Friday, July 17, 2026, Tokyo Midtown (Akasaka, Minato Ward) rolls out "MIDTOWN Summer Workshop," a series of hands-on programs held throughout the summer. This year's lineup has been expanded to more than 20 workshops, giving families a cool, air-conditioned destination for summer outings and a source of ideas for kids' independent research projects.
The lineup ranges from an artist-led workshop where visitors build a giant sculpture out of newspaper and packing tape, to a hotel-staff experience at The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo open to non-guests, kids' design workshops at Tokyo Midtown Design Hub, and original item-making sessions at shops throughout the complex — spanning art, design, and behind-the-scenes work experiences. Visitors can make something with their own hands, get a glimpse of professional work, and learn together as a family while exploring Tokyo Midtown's facilities and stores.
Build a Giant Dinosaur Out of Newspaper and Packing Tape
Kotaro Sekiguchi: Let's Build a Midtown-saurus with Newspaper and Packing Tape!
July 25 (Sat) and 26 (Sun)

An art workshop invites visitors to create an impressive, giant dinosaur using nothing but newspaper and packing tape.
The workshop is led by Kotaro Sekiguchi, an artist active nationwide who works exclusively in newspaper and packing tape. He is known for his distinctive style of building dynamic three-dimensional sculptures from flat sheets of newspaper and tape alone.

Throughout the two-day session, participants join in one after another to work on the "Midtown-saurus," each assembling a part that gets added to the growing structure, so that many hands gradually complete a single giant dinosaur together. After taking part in the collaborative build, visitors can also try making their own original creation — a dinosaur, animal, or vehicle of their choice. The workshop offers both the satisfaction of building one shared piece as a group and the fun of shaping an original idea of one's own, making it a distinctive independent-research experience unique to Tokyo Midtown.
Dates: July 25 (Sat), July 26 (Sun)
Hours: 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM (last admission 5:30 PM)
Location: Plaza B1, near the information counter and the art installation "Ishinki"
Fee: ¥500 (tax included)
Capacity: Up to 20 participants at a time
How to Join: First-come, first-served on the day — visit the workshop reception directly

About Kotaro Sekiguchi
Born in 1983 in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, Sekiguchi made his first newspaper-and-tape stegosaurus during summer vacation in the third grade of elementary school. For his graduation project in the Department of Sculpture at Tama Art University, he created a piece over 6 meters tall. In 2012, he received the 15th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art. In 2014, he published a book with Kodansha introducing newspaper-and-tape craft projects for parents and children to make together. He currently works at Asahide Gakuen, a school for children with special needs, while creating, exhibiting, and holding newspaper-and-tape art workshops across Japan.
